The Orphan Works Bill

Journal Entry: Thu May 8, 2008, 2:55 AM
This takes less than a minute, it's a pre-generated message sent to your congressperson that all you have to do is sign- DO IT!
[link]

And read this: [link]

Chances are, you likely have heard of this before- after all, it would be especially crippling to art communities. I'll admit I'd seen this issue before but thought it wasn't worth making a big deal about- but now I know the full effects and consequences this bill would have, extending far beyond orphaned work.

This bill has good intentions: it wants to solve a legitimate problem. But it's going about the wrong way of doing it. If it got passed, supposedly every single work out there would be considered orphan unless specifically registered under your name and watermarked.

I hate to say it but you might want to start getting those horrid watermarks up now becuase from what I've seen on that CA thread I'll bet some oppurtunists are already starting to scour places like this to download.

I'll admit the whole copyright issue didn't really interest me too much because I wasn't intending to receive any money for what I posted in DA, CA, and other places. Even if you never plan to make money with visual intellectual property, do it anyway as a tribute to those who do (or likely will in my case).

Yeah, northeast. (Not a whole lot of corn where I am though- midsized town.)

Yikes about your illness, hope you're better now. Was it something big like mono?

I was thinking about maybe doing a London study abroad, but I want to look in at the types of schools there first. But yeah, I definitely don't want to deal with language barriers, hehe. And it stinks that scholarship money can't cover any abroad semester. Are you planning any trips/abroad studies yourself?

And it's pretty likely we'll have a class together. I'm illustration with a double minor in media studies (computer modelling) and fine art so if you're any one of those three (I think you said you're FA?) then yeah.

Dawson and Robinson... structural next year due to illness at the start of the semester... we will most likely have a class together in the future. Are you attempting to go on Italy trip or other study abroads?

I do indeed!

I remember from scheduling that certain blocks were kinda similar but I didn't know that meant teachers as well- maybe its a coincidence. (For example, Brent only teaches on Mondays I'm pretty sure).

Do you have Dawson and Viveiros for your fine arts classes? Gill for structural?

I do have Brent in fact. Do you have Howard and Peterson as well? because if you do we have almost exactly the same classes.
